Our renewable energy business currently has an opening for a permanent Senior Grid Engineer. The role will be based at Newbridge and will report to the Grid Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible provide electrical expertise in the areas of project specification, design, design review, procurement, construction management and performance testing of Electrical infrastructure and services associated with Bord na Mona projects.
The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:
- Provide professional, cost effective and value adding electrical engineering services within Renewable Energy Business Unit. The candidate should possess a strong knowledge of electrical engineering and in particular practical experience of managing connections to the Irish transmission system, and be well-versed in current Irish grid connection policy and regulation. The candidate will also actively participate in industry forums, committees and working groups, disseminating insights to enhance delivery of renewable energy projects;
- Lead the delivery of Grid Team projects, ensuring efficient delivery of works and services. Management of interactions with System Operators, electrical and civil contractors, and other key stakeholders. Actively participate in team and project meetings to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget as well as in compliance with statutory safety and health regulations. Management and coordination of project energisations, construction related grid outages and grid code compliance testing for renewable energy projects;
- Lead engineering and optioneering processes to derive optimal grid connection solutions. Oversee and manage technical analysis of power flows, network capacity, electrical constraint and curtailment, ensuring insights are effectively disseminated to identify the most commercially viable grid connection option. Ensure project compliance with Grid Code requirements by actively monitoring updates to Grid Code, System Operator requirements, connection policies, applying relevant changes to facilitate smooth delivery and energisation of renewable energy projects through to achieving operational certificates;
- Management of technical projects through various phases of the project lifecycle. Prepare and manage technical project tenders and contract documentation, actively monitoring, controlling and optimising costs. Oversee and analyse all aspects of design, manufacturing, processing, construction, operation and maintenance to ensure compliance with project requirements, including obligations under grid connection agreements. Identify and coordinate stakeholders throughout project phases, ensuring key performance indicators are met. Facilitate timely, clear and effective information exchange among stakeholders to ensure deliverables are well understood, whilst proactively monitoring and addressing risks and opportunities to optimise project outcomes. Continuously track progress against project plans, implementing corrective actions where necessary to mitigate overruns and ensure cost effective delivery of professional engineering services;
- All employees are expected to co-operate fully with all provisions taken by the company for ensuring Health, Safety and Welfare of themselves, fellow employees and members of the public. Identify, understand and apply all Health & Safety legislation and regulatory requirements as a fundamental element of any construction design or undertaking ensuring safety of employees and members of the public during construction, testing, commissioning and operation;
- Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team’s, objectives;
The Person:
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:
- Highly Qualified – Holding a Level 8 Honours Degree (FETAC) in Electrical Engineering (essential). A Level 9 Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline is an advantage;
- Experienced in the Industry – With 10+ years of industry experience, including at least 5 years of direct experience in developing and managing 110 kV+ transmission grid connections in Ireland;
- Technical Expert – Demonstrating expertise in HV electrical design and consenting for 110/220/400 kV substations, underground cables, and overhead line infrastructure;
- Skilled in Transmission-Scale Projects – With direct experience in delivering transmission-scale connections for solar and/or wind farms;
- Detail-Oriented & Collaborative – Comfortable liaising with grid teams, project teams, and senior management within the Renewable Energy business unit;
- Strong in Technical Oversight – Capable of verifying and approving third-party designs and experienced in contract, financial, and project management;
- Process-Driven – Experienced in managing technical and construction processes with System Operators for the connection of transmission substations for renewable energy projects;
- Excellent Communicator – With strong technical report writing and communication skills;
- Proficient in Relevant Software – Experience with AutoCAD and electrical design software (e.g., EPLAN, PSS/e, DIgSILENT) is advantageous;
